From the noble house of Shah, in the city of Aden, Shah-kael was born into privilege. His family tent stood for generations near the Great Fountain, where he would bathe and admire the handiwork of his forefathers.
At a young age, it was discovered that his talent at magic was exceptional. His father immediately sent him to study under the finest wizard in Aden, but his patience for its study left something to be desired. While other students labored to discover the intricacies of a spell, Shah-kael would scribble a few notes on his forearm, then run down to the practice yard to use it while fencing one of the guards. Dutiful, responsible young mage apprentices practiced their technique with the wand, rod, and staff. Shah-kael practiced casting spells through his sword, battleaxe, and mace. During his tenure as a student, the wizard Ellowyn went through many guards and discovered several variations on common spells, including one that, instead of levitating an object, makes genasi uncontrollably vomit hovering lights. Ellowyn still uses them to light the students’ quarters and dining hall.
Finally, after fighting off a small army of porridge golems that Shah-kael accidentally created while trying to launch a bowl of oatmeal into his sparring partner’s face, Ellowyn admitted defeat. Though Shah-kael showed so much promise as a wizard, he had the soul of a fighter, and a person’s destiny cannot be denied. She transferred his tuition and belongings to The Cabal of The Buring Sword along with letters of recommendation and a surprisingly friendly farewell. The Cabal was the secretive school where Aden’s infamous swordmages were trained. Very few were accepted. Much fewer graduated after five years. And a few were sent home on a funeral cart or disappeared altogether. Shah-kael graduated in a year.
On the day his obligatory service to Aden’s militia ended, Shah-kael was summoned to The Council of Nine Tribes. Having fulfilled his Duty to The City, he was being called forth to fulfill his Duty to The Tribe. There was the smell of trouble brewing to the East. The Greenmarket reported some interesting customers who may be opening doors better left locked. Shah-kael’s duty is to find these people and determine whether their cause will help or harm Aden, or at least if they are just or unjust. If their intent is to harm Aden, he is to kill them, otherwise he is to aid them. What they didn’t mention was that the two names appeared in a prophesy along with the name of Shah-kael….
